Text Surveys
Questions people can answer by typing
A text survey asks people to type an answer, choose from a list, pick a point on a scale, or give a number, a date or a time. It opens from a link or a QR code in any phone’s browser, and never asks for a camera.

What you can ask
Fifteen kinds of question
- Typed: Short answer, up to 300 characters · Paragraph, up to 5,000.
- Choices: Choose one · Choose several, as many as apply or between limits you set · Dropdown · Yes or no.
- Scales: Number scale, from 0 or 1 up to 10, with words at each end · Stars, 3 to 10 · Labelled scale, 5 or 7 points, each with words · Likely to recommend, 0 to 10, with its recommend score.
- Details: Number, with optional limits and a unit · Date · Time · Email address · Phone number.
Email addresses and phone numbers are shown only on each person’s own response.
Mix and match
Beside video, or on their own

Put typed and chosen questions in the same survey as recorded ones, or build a survey with nothing recorded at all. A survey with no recorded question never asks for a camera, and it works in phone browsers that can’t record.
You can preview the survey exactly as a respondent will see it before you publish, and shuffle the order of the questions, or of a question’s options, for each person. You can also start from one of the templates we offer, and get your own copy to edit.
What you get back
Read as themes, counted as answers

Typed answers are kept exactly as written, then sorted by the themes they touch, with positive, neutral and negative splits, alongside the themes from spoken answers. Choices, scales and numbers are counted for each question and shown as a chart over a table of the same numbers, with an average where one means something, and a recommend score for the 0 to 10 question. Email addresses and phone numbers are counted, never listed. Each response shows the wording the respondent saw. You can download the responses as a spreadsheet, CSV or Excel, of whatever your filters show.

FAQ
What people ask first
Do people need a camera?
No. A survey with no recorded question never asks for one, and works in phone browsers that can’t record.
Can I mix typed and video questions?
Yes. A survey can have recorded, typed and chosen questions in any order. Each response counts once, whatever it contains.
Can I see it before I send it?
Yes. Preview walks your draft exactly as a respondent will see it, without saving anything or opening a camera.
Are typed answers translated?
No. They are kept exactly as typed, in whatever language and script people write in. Nothing is transcribed or translated.
Do people need an account or an app?
No. The survey opens in the phone’s browser from a link or a QR code. They enter a few details, agree to the consent, and answer.
How is a text survey priced?
The same as any survey: by analysed responses, at the prices on the pricing page. Your first 10 analysed responses are free.
